The 2 principles you can count on to achieve anything you want

// Every month, I send a text born out of my experience and my reflections - like this one. Sometimes with learning and sometimes with unresolved dilemma, I share how it feels to be a corporate activist. I don't know if you've had the same experience, but during the lock down I have been bombarded with suggestions and offers to keep myself busy.

In the last months, many service providers, coaches, MOOCs and authors have offered their knowledge for free as a way to be part of the solution somehow (or to surf on the wave for self-promotion, or both, we'll never know...).

And of course I fell for it... I was really NOT in the category of people have nothing to do at home and feeling like a lion in a cage. But I am super curious by nature and I love to learn, so the overview page of Udemy or Edx is like a candy store for me - I know, how much more geek 🤓 can I sound?...

So I signed up for a 35-day course based on daily video and exercises - allegedly asking 'as little as 20 minutes a day' - in reality the videos were 20mn, then you had the exercises which needed some proper thinking if you wanted to get the most out of it, and then there was a FB group where many participants were sharing their insights and progress and that costed time as well to keep up with.

It was GREAT value - but it was also much more time invested than I thought it would be, and that I thought I would be capable of finding.

So why I am sharing this with you? Because this challenge I threw to myself proved me (again) 2 principles I hold dear, and which may be insightful to you:

#1 - 'Time is not something that you have - Time is something that you create'

I am a busy bee - with a full time exec job, a hubby and 2 young kids, and a 1/2h self-care commitment to myself everyday, oh and I am a big sleeper 😴 , I'm running all day everyday and feel like life is a stressful as a plate spinning show...

But you know, it may not be easy, but it is always possible to prioritize, to organize differently and to create the time you need for this thing that you are really motivated about.

And there is where the second principle kicks in - because motivation is not enough for a sustained effort like this over 35 days. Motivation is what got me started, but discipline is what got me to the end.

#2 - 'Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most'.

There is the logistic aspect of discipline - choosing a certain time of the day, plugging the new activity onto an existing habit etc... But when looking at the intrinsic driver which makes you stick to the routine, it is the pull of the vision of what is waiting for you on the other side of the effort.

Of course what I wanted in these evening was to find my couch and continue 'How to get away with murder' on Netflix (yeah, I am catching up with oldies) - but what I wanted more was the outcome of the course - so that's how I found the inner energy of doing yoga straight from waking up (most days - I am not a super hero...!)

So this course proved to me that it was possible to sustain finding time for more.

I am hoping you too can find for yourself a challenge which will force you to re-visit your routines - and your relationship with time and discipline. Once you get the hang of it, these are 2 amazing tools to count on whenever you need to go the extra mile or want to prove something to yourself.

Give it a go, tell me how it goes and if you'd like some complementary insights on the other side of the same coin which is productivity - I invite you to find my short video on this topic in the Humans of Big Corp group.

Be well, Be strong, Be you.  don't stay alone!

With love, always,

Marie
